Minesweeper Tips: Patterns to Clear Faster
Minesweeper is mostly logic, not luck. A few common number patterns solve the majority of boards without a single guess.
Start where the numbers are low
After the first click opens an area, work outward from 1s. A 1 touching exactly one hidden cell tells you that cell is a mine — flag it, and every other cell around satisfied numbers is safe.
The 1-1 pattern
Two 1s side by side along a wall of hidden cells: the mine touching the first 1 is also touching the second, so the cell beyond the second 1 (not touching the first) is safe.
The 1-2 pattern
A 1 next to a 2 along a straight edge: the 2 needs one more mine than the 1 can share, so the hidden cell touching the 2 but not the 1 is a mine.
Count the remaining mines
The counter shows mines not yet flagged. Near the end, when a few cells remain, comparing that count with the numbers often settles which cells are safe.
When you must guess
Sometimes a board genuinely needs a guess. Guess early rather than late (less to lose), and prefer cells away from the numbered frontier — a corner has only three neighbours, so it is the likeliest cell to be a zero that opens up a new area. The Daily Minesweeper opens with a safe area already revealed, so everyone starts equal.
