Klondike Solitaire Tips and Strategy

Draw-one Klondike is one of the more winnable solitaire games, and good habits raise your win rate sharply. The key is uncovering face-down cards as early as you can.

Uncover face-down cards first

Every face-down card is information you don’t have. Prefer moves that flip a tableau card, and when you have a choice, play from the column with the most hidden cards.

Don’t rush to the foundations

Aces and twos should go up straight away, but higher cards are sometimes more useful in the tableau, where they can hold a card of the opposite colour. Move a card to a foundation when it no longer blocks or supports anything.

Empty columns only when you have a king ready

Only a king (or a run headed by a king) can fill an empty column. Clearing one with no king to put there wastes the space; clearing it when a king is waiting on a face-down stack is very strong.

Choose the right king

When two kings could fill a space, pick the one whose colour matches the queens you can already play on it, or the one that frees more face-down cards.

Playing for the leaderboard

The weekly board ranks wins by fewest moves, so avoid shuffling cards back and forth and cycle the stock only when you need to. Undo is there when you spot a better line.
