Daily Target Strategy: Reaching the Number

Daily Target gives everyone six numbers and a three-digit target. Each day’s puzzle can be solved exactly, so the game is finding a route and then finding a short one. Unsure of a rule? See the Daily Target rules questions.

Get near with a big number

The target is usually a few hundred (which numbers you get), so start by multiplying a large number by a small one, or adding two large numbers, to land in the neighbourhood. Then use the small numbers that are left to close the gap. New to the rules? See how Daily Target works on the game page.

Work backwards from the target

Check whether the target divides evenly by any number you have. If it does, you only need to build the other factor from the rest. If it is just above or below a product you can make, work out the difference and see whether the remaining numbers can supply it.

Keep small numbers for the end

Small numbers are the flexible ones: they make the last adjustment of one, two or three. Spending them early on a clumsy step leaves you without a way to fix a near miss. You also do not have to use every number.

Remember what is not allowed

A subtraction must stay above zero and a division must be exact, so some tempting steps are rejected. Dividing by a number that does not fit evenly never works; look for a pair that does divide, such as 100 and 4, or multiply instead.

Closest first, then fewer steps

The daily leaderboard ranks by distance from the target, then by steps, and the steps that built your closest number are counted, plus one for every undo. A shorter route to the same answer ranks higher.

Undo and Reset are allowed before you submit, but each undo adds a step (Reset adds one per step it clears), so plan the route first. Once you submit, the page shows a best possible solution so you can compare routes. The server replays your steps to check the score, so only legal solutions are ranked.
