2048 Strategy: The Corner Method

Most games of 2048 are lost to a cluttered board, not bad luck. The corner method keeps things tidy enough to reach 2048 consistently.

Pick a corner and keep your biggest tile there

Choose one corner — say bottom left — and keep your highest tile in it for the whole game. Every move should protect that corner.

Use two directions, three at most

With the corner at bottom left, slide mostly down and left. Use right only when you must, and avoid up: sliding away from the corner can pull the big tile out of place and let a 2 drop into it.

Build a chain along the edge

Arrange the bottom row in descending order from the corner — 256, 128, 64, 32 — so each tile can merge into its neighbour. When that row is full and ordered, continue the chain snaking back along the row above.

Keep the edge row full

A full bottom row can’t shift when you press left, so your corner stays put. If a gap opens in it, fill it quickly.

Chasing a high score

The weekly leaderboard ranks your score when a board runs out of moves. Undo is available, but every move counts toward how far you get — slow down when the board gets crowded.
