Is the first click in Minesweeper ever a mine?

On this pageWhat that means for your openingThe daily boardAfter the first click

No. Your first click is never a mine, and the cells touching it are mine-free too, so the first click always opens an area for you to work from.

Your first click in Minesweeper is always safe. In free play the mines are not placed until you make it, and the game keeps them away from the cell you chose and from all eight cells around it.

What that means for your opening

None of the cells touching your first click can hide a mine, so that cell is always blank and opens up on its own (what happens when you click a blank cell). You start with a patch of numbers to read instead of a single guess.

The daily board

The Daily Minesweeper is the same field for everyone, so the mines cannot be placed around your click. Instead the board opens with one blank area already revealed, and nobody has to guess to get started.

After the first click

Every other cell can be a mine, so read the numbers before you click. The Minesweeper tips guide shows patterns that find safe cells without guessing, and how to play Minesweeper covers the rest of the rules.
