What if you can’t move in checkers?
You lose. A player with no legal move on their turn loses, whether every piece was captured or the pieces they have left are simply blocked.
You don’t have to lose all your pieces to lose the game. If it’s your turn and you have no legal move, the other player wins.
Two ways it happens
- No pieces left: every piece has been captured.
- Nothing can move: your remaining pieces are blocked by their own side or the enemy, and no jump is available.
Example
A black piece on b2 with Red pieces on a1 and c1 has nowhere to step and nothing to jump, because there is no room beyond either piece. If it’s Black’s only piece, Black loses on the spot.
Blocking is a real plan, especially when you are ahead. If neither side can make progress, the game is instead drawn after 40 moves without a capture.
