How do you build columns in FreeCell?

On this pageWhat can go whereMoving a run

Build downward in alternating colors: a card goes on one that is exactly one rank higher and the opposite color. An empty column takes any card.

On the eight columns you build down, one rank at a time, with the colors alternating. A black 6 goes on a red 7, and a red 6 goes on a black 7. Suits do not matter, only the color.

What can go where

  • A card goes on a card that is exactly one rank higher and the other color.
  • An empty column accepts any card, or any valid sequence.
  • Nothing goes on top of an ace, because there is no rank below it.

Moving a run

A run of cards built in this way can move together, as long as you have room to do it (how many cards you can move at once). Building long runs makes later moves easier, as the strategy guide explains. The full rules cover the rest.
