Can Reversi end in a draw?

Yes. If both players finish with the same number of discs, such as 32 to 32 on a full board, the game is drawn. Empty squares left at the end are not counted.

When the game ends, each player’s discs are counted, and the higher total wins. If the totals are equal, the game is a draw.

How the count works here

  • Only discs count. Empty squares left when neither player can move aren’t given to anyone. Some tournament rules award them to the winner; Trindo doesn’t.
  • A full-board draw is 32–32. On a board with empty squares, any equal split draws, for example 30–30 with four squares left.

Agreeing a draw

You don’t have to play to the end. Either player can offer a draw during the game, and if the other accepts, it ends level.

Exact draws are rare because one move can flip many discs. If you’re heading for a close finish, count every remaining move: the strategy guide explains how.
