Reversi rules questions
Short, exact answers to the Reversi rules people most often look up — each one matches how the game is actually scored here.
Who goes first in Reversi?
Black always moves first in Reversi. The game starts with four discs in the centre, two of each colour on the diagonals, and Black has four opening moves.
Read the full answer →What happens if you can’t move in Reversi?
If you have no legal move, your turn passes and your opponent plays again. You can’t pass by choice: whenever you have a legal move, you must make one.

Place a disc so a line of opposing discs sits between it and another of your discs. Every disc in every such line flips: across, up and down, or diagonally.
Read the full answer →When does a game of Reversi end?
Reversi ends when neither player has a legal move. Usually all 64 squares are full, but a game can stop early with empty squares if both sides are stuck.
Read the full answer →Can Reversi end in a draw?
Yes. If both players finish with the same number of discs, such as 32 to 32 on a full board, the game is drawn. Empty squares left at the end are not counted.
Read the full answer →Is Reversi the same as Othello?
Nearly. Othello is a trademarked version of Reversi with a fixed diagonal start and Black moving first. That modern setup is exactly the one played here.
