Naval Battle
Take aim. Sink the whole fleet before they sink yours.
How to play
Sink all five ships in your opponent’s hidden fleet before they sink yours.
How a turn works
- First, set up: pick a ship from the fleet panel, then click a cell on your own grid to place it.
- Use Rotate to switch a ship between horizontal and vertical before clicking, or Randomize to let the game place your whole fleet.
- Press Ready once all five ships are placed — your opponent sets up at the same time and sees none of it.
- When the battle starts, fire one shot per turn at any cell on the enemy grid, then wait for their shot.
- Every shot is answered with hit or miss, and the turn passes either way — a miss never grants another try.
Key rules
- Each fleet has five ships: the Carrier (5 cells), Battleship (4), Cruiser (3), Submarine (3) and Destroyer (2).
- Ships sit in a straight line — horizontal or vertical — and never overlap, on your own 10×10 grid.
- Fleets stay hidden until they are hit: your opponent sees only their own shots, and an unhit ship is never revealed by the log or the board.
- A ship sinks the moment every one of its cells has been hit, and the game announces it to both players.
- You can’t fire at the same cell twice, so every miss is marked off for good.
- The first player to hit every cell of the opposing fleet wins.
While setting up, pick a ship and click a cell on your own grid to place it (toggle orientation first if needed), or click Randomize. Once battle starts, click any cell on the enemy grid to fire.
Questions
How many ships are in a game of Naval Battle, and what sizes?
Five: a five-cell Carrier, four-cell Battleship, two three-cell ships (a Cruiser and a Submarine), and a two-cell Destroyer.
How big is the Naval Battle grid?
Each player’s own grid is 10 by 10, labeled A-J and 1-10.
Can my opponent see where I’ve placed my ships?
No — fleet placement stays hidden until a ship is actually hit; nothing sent to your opponent’s browser reveals an unhit ship.

Naval Battle (Battleship) Strategy — Battleship strategy that works: fire in a checkerboard pattern, hunt around every hit, track which ships are left, and place your own fleet to survive.
